In the years since the Batiquitos Lagoon Enhancement Project was completed, there have been changes to the bottom of the lagoon, especially a large buildup of sedimentation forming several extensive "islands" which threaten the flow of ocean water in and out (Agnes Rosetti, "Trouble looms for lagoon," San Diego Union-Tribune, July 2, 2000). Thanks to the monitoring program, we have a sedimentation map for up to Feb. 1999:

The California Department of Fish and Game has been supervising recent maintenance dredging--to dredge out these buildups and to put sand on the beach and the nesting sites.
