BIOLOGICAL MONITORING PROGRAM

Following the Enhancement Project of 1994-1996, a long-term biological monitoring program was set up for Batiquitos Lagoon.  This program calls for various sampling activities during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 10th years after restoration of the lagoon.

According to the report (Long-term Monitoring and Pilot Vegetation Program for the Batiquitos Lagoon Enhancement Project),  the goals of the monitoring include the following:

The monitoring program includes studies of

    Blue_Arrow9040.gif (140 bytes) Vegetation (1997, vegetation maps 1998-2000)

    Blue_Arrow9040.gif (140 bytes) Fish (1997)

    Blue_Arrow9040.gif (140 bytes) Benthic organisms (1997)

    Blue_Arrow9040.gif (140 bytes) Birds (1997)

Blue_Arrow9040.gif (140 bytes) Water quality and sedimentation (1997).

(In addition, there are eelgrass and cordgrass restoration programs.)

The first year's report (that is, for 1997) has been completed.  (These reports are supplied to the Batiquitos Lagoon  Foundation by the Port.)  The first year saw immediate and big changes in the lagoon's fish population.
