BIRDS

About 185 species of birds have been seen at Batiquitos Lagoon at different times of the year.

(In addition, there are records of other species which have showed up sporadically and are not usually associated specifically with lagoons.)

Most of these birds can be further subcategorized on the basis of feeding behavior within the wetland (the five major wetland guilds):

swimming divers (grebes, diving ducks, and others)

surface swimmers (dabbling ducks)

flight feeders (terns, skimmers, and others)

walkers/runners (plovers and most sandpipers)

waders/fishers (herons, egrets, and others)

Many species also live on the land surrounding the lagoon, and some of these are dependent on the wetland habitat.

A monthly survey was conducted for ten years - from the spring of 1993 to the spring of 2003.  A graph of the data shows that there were more species seen after the opening in late 1996 and in a more regular seasonal pattern.

A new survey is being conducted on the first Friday of each month. (See also the article in the most recent newsletter.)
